Game Warden Junior L. Briggs announced last week that he had moved his office to the third floor of the courthouse. Briggs also stated that the dove season just around the corner should be a good one. He says doves are more plentiful and in excellent condition due to the good grain crops and other vegetation.
We've been wanting to say "Thank you," for our new black top U.S. Highway 190, that is also main street of the town. It's like riding on a foam rubber cushion. This pleasure we've had several weeks.
We understand that in the sandy land district of San Saba county there is an immense melon crop. We are told of five and seven acre watermelon patches. Come to the patch and get your pick for 15 cents. Isn't it a pity these excess melons are not places where needed and can be used to advantage?

The City Council passed an ordinance that all people who obtained water at the pump house would pay the small fee of 5¢ per barrel and a container was placed to receive the funds, along with a sign stating the fee. City Secretary, James Reavis, says it costs the City money to pump and process the water and that is why the ordinance was passed. Anyone who wishes to take the water from the mill pond is welcomed to do so, says Reavis, without any charge, but the water taken from the pump house must be paid for.
The football schedule for the San Saba Armadillos has been announced for the coming season. The schedule for the season is the following, with district 17AA games being designated by an asterisk (*):

John W. Berkley began his duties today as the new City Traffic Policeman. The new officer will leave for a four-week course in Police Training at Texas A&M University. Berkley will be on call 24 hours per day, however, his patrol hours will vary.
Official football practice will be underway Aug. 19, for all three schools in the county. Coach John Baskin announced last week that the high school gridsters would receive their shoes Aug. 14, and they will report at the Farley-Felts Clinic for their physical examinations.
The first screw worm case in three years was found in San Saba county last week, County Agent Billy Kidd has announced. The case was found in a young calf on the Buster Pool Ranch. This is the second case in the county in the past five years.
Jo Nell Epperson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Epperson of Cherokee, won fifth place at the State 4-H Horse Show in Fort Worth. Her winning event was pole bending. She also participated in the halter classes and barrel races but failed to place in either event.
There were two babies born at the San Saba Memorial Hospital from August 5 to August 12. Mr. and Mrs. Farley Graves are the parents of Carolyn Renee', eight pounds, born August 7. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Williams are the parents of Clara Jean, seven pounds, one ounce, born August 11.
IT'S A WOMAN'S WORLD–– says Mrs. Amelia Cowan. She suggests that more women enter the legal and medical professions. Girls who are soon to be off to college with no fixed goals (except for husband hunting), why not try for a place in these fields ––ones that are never crowded? Of course is would mean a long, hard, road, with a lot of late studying, but a great challenge.
