I Can See! I Can See!

A bunch of years ago, I called my wife one day and told her I could not see. This frightened her as she thought I had lost my eyesight. I quickly explained that I could see, but while trying to read, everything was blurred. Thus, my first visit to the Optometrist and my first pair of glasses. Perhaps you have been there as well.

Could you imagine what it would be like to be blind? Those of us who have our seeing have a difficult time with this. I could ask you to close your eyes for a few moments, and you could not see. But then you will open them, and the seeing will be back.

Jesus met a man one day who was blind. He had been blind since he was born. He had never seen a tree, ever seen a rose or a bluebonnet. He had never seen the snow as it covered the ground or what it was like to see God light up the sky with lightening. He had never seen his father or mother’s face.

His disciples who were with Jesus asked Him this question, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” John 9:2 (NASB) The thought at this time was that sin had caused this. Jesus’ answer was, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” John 9:3 At this Jesus spat on the ground, made clay of the spittle, and then told him to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. He obeyed what Jesus said and came back seeing. (John 9:6-7) For the first time he was able to see all the things he had only imagined before. What a wonderful moment. What joy, I’m sure, was his on this day.

As I read through this story I am always impressed with the miracle that Jesus performed. This had to make a change in this man’s life. We see that later as Jesus talked to him, he told Him, “Lord, I believe.” And it was at this point that He worshipped Jesus. (John 9:38)

Today, many of us can see with our eyes, but we can be blinded to the most important things anyone could ever do. That would be to believe in Jesus and be obedient to what He commands us in the New Testament in order to become a child of God. When we hear the message of God and realize we are sinners and we believe in Jesus as God’s Son, we are to repent of our sins, confess Jesus as Lord, and be baptized to be saved. (Mark 16:16; Luke 13:3; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21) Since we can see physically, let’s make sure we are not blinded spiritually and obey the teachings of our Lord.
