What to Do Today

So, what kind of a day are you having? Has your day been going well? Have you had some sort of setback? Have you learned some disappointing news that is weighing on your mind? Some days everything goes well, while other days we are thrown into turmoil.

Whatever your day is like, let's remember the words of the Psalmist in Psalms 118:24, “This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (NASB) What a wonderful thought! When life is going well, we have no problem remembering this, do we? When things are troubling us, we may be tempted to forget it.

If you will notice in this verse, we begin with the Lord. We find that He has made this day. He makes every day and will continue to until the end of all time. Since God made it, it has to be good! When God created all things as we read in Genesis we can read, “God saw that it was good.” Everything that God does in providing for us is good. Therefore, this day the Lord has made is good.

But also notice that God has done something, and now we get to respond to that. “Let us rejoice and be glad.” Have you done this? Note that the verse does not say to rejoice when things are going as we desire them to. God made this day; I am to rejoice and be glad.

“But Doug,” someone may say, “this day has brought me heartache and pain. It has brought me separation and hurt. How can I do that when I feel the way I do?” There is no doubt that this will be trying. But by rejoicing and being glad for the day—not the pain—I am reminded that God is still on the throne and cares about me. The Creator of all things has it under control and will help me. When I can’t rely or depend on anyone else, my God is there, and He hears my pain. He will help me through all of the hardships I face, and He will direct my steps as I lean upon Him. That is true for all of those who are living for Jesus and who are trying to please Him.

I hope that all is going well with you and that your day is going well. If not, remember the words of the Psalmist, and let’s rejoice and be glad that God cares about us. 1 Peter 5:6-7
