Message from Dr. Craig Whiting:

I wish that I had better news for the county, but the pandemic that seems to have hit other areas of the state so hard is now taking its toll on San Saba County. We have had over 130 cases of the virus in the county, and we have 30 active cases in the county as of this writing. There are still four cases of COVID among our nursing home residents. There are four people from our county who are currently hospitalized and we have had three deaths related to COVID. One of the unusual aspects of this infection is that many people seem to start with mild symptoms but then become more ill even several days after testing positive. It is one of the reasons that it is so important that a person isolate themselves when they have the infection, even if they don’t feel symptoms. The household family and other close contacts similarly must quarantine themselves. Isolating after testing positive is for 10 days and is intended to protect your family and community from spreading the infection. Quarantine after close contact with a person with COVID is for 14 days. The quarantine is longer than the infected person’s isolation because you have to add a few extra days to the quarantine for the “incubation period” of the virus – that is the time between exposure and when symptoms might appear or the test turn positive. This period is thought to be from about 72 hours but may be longer even up to a week.
