Members of the Cherokee High School and Richland Springs boys and girls varsity track and field teams proudly represented San Saba County on Saturday, May 14, during the 2022 UIL Class 1A Track and Field State Championships meet held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

Cherokee Indians And Lady Indians

A state champion was crowned in Austin for the Cherokee Indians as Joseph Bond had himself an outstanding showing in the boys’ discus as he dominated the competition en route to an individual 1A gold medal. With a massive 170’10” mark for his top throw, Bond easily placed first in the discus event that was over 18 feet more than runnerup Brody White from Benjamin High School. Bond also made the podium in the boys’ shot put event as his best toss of 51’8” was great enough for a silver medal behind Theodore Chavez of Lazbuddie High School.

Also medaling for Cherokee was the Lady Indians’ own Sydnie Bond in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles event as she placed third with a time of 46.36 seconds. Bond just narrowly missed out on a second-place finish by 0.05 seconds behind Alli Scott of Moran High School and gold medalist Camdyn Childs’ time of 46.08 seconds.

The Indians’ relay team of Gunner Baugh, Caleob Houston, Rode Ligon, and Joseph Bond qualified for state and finished ninth in the boys’ 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:34:54 seconds, while the Lady Indians were represented in the high jump by Brissa Baugh who placed ninth with a mark of 4’8” in the girls’ high jump.
