Cherokee Chatter

If you've driven past Cherokee Home for Children recently, you've likely noticed something new taking shape on campus. This massive construction project has quickly become an exciting symbol of hope and growth. Now, the new Richard W. Zipp Transitional Living Center is just weeks away from completion.

This thoughtfully designed building will serve youth who demonstrate readiness for the next stage of independence through our Transitional Living Program. The program helps prepare them for the responsibilities of independence as they pursue college, trade school, military service or entry into the workforce. Inside, are 5 private bedrooms with individual bathrooms, a spacious shared living area, a full kitchen for learning everyday skills, an office and conference room for mentoring and planning, and living quarters for a mentor family. Three attached efficiency apartments will also give college and trade school students a place to return during breaks which provides a steady home base as they take their next steps.

At the heart of the program are Israel and Valerie Valdez, who have faithfully served at Cherokee Home for Children for 11 years. In addition to serving as mentor parents, Israel is Director of Programs and Valerie is Director of Education. Their leadership roles are so valuable but it's their genuine love for the young people they serve that truly defines this ministry.

For the Valdezes, this isn't just about teaching budgeting, cooking, or job interview skills. It's about walking alongside young adults during one of life's most pivotal seasons, cheering them on, offering guidance, and helping them build confidence as they move toward independence. Central to the program is a commitment to showing God's love and sharing faith in a way that makes not only a lasting difference in daily life, but an eternal impact as well.

As the finishing touches are added, the new TLC stands as more than just a beautiful building. It's a hope that every young adult who leaves Cherokee Home for Children will do so equipped, supported, and ready to thrive.
