San Saba Track and Field competes at area meet

The San Saba High School boys and girls varsity track and field teams competed on Tuesday, April 13, in a Class 2A area meet hosted by Falls City High School and had several standout athletes in their respective events. Other schools competing at the meet hosted by Falls City were Brackett High School, Center Point High School, Charlotte High School, Goldthwaite High School, Harper High School, Johnson City High School, Junction High School, La Pryor High School, Mason High School, Sabinal High School, and San Antonio Stacey High School.

In the boys’ high jump, Reagan Mejia was outstanding as he brought home a gold medal for San Saba with a superb mark of 6’1” to edge out Brody Comey of Mason to become the regional champion of the event. Mejia’s teammate Lane Miller also advanced to regionals in the high jump as his best mark of 5’10” earned him a third-place finish.

Both relay teams that the Dillos entered at the area meet each placed third in their respective races to qualify for regionals. The senior foursome of Mejia, Drake Bryant, Wesley Lackey, and Franco Franco earned a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter relay with a solid time of 44.46 seconds that just edged out the team from Johnson City. In the 4x200-meter relay, Mejia, Lackey, Franco, and Ethan Gonzales placed third and edged out rival Goldthwaite by a fraction of a second with a mark of 1:33.44.

Also qualifying for regionals in their individual respective events for the San Saba boys was Lackey in third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12 seconds, Bryant earning a bronze medal in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 52.41 seconds, Lance Taylor had a mark of 18’8.25” in the long jump that placed him third, and teammate Lackey also qualified for regionals as his best mark of 18’2.5” in the long jump earned him a fourth-place finish.

As a team, the San Saba boys placed fifth out of 13 schools with 62 points as the Dillos were behind Falls City with 125, Mason with 114, Goldthwaite with 98, and just edged out of fourth place by Brackett with 64 points.

The Lady Dillos were able to qualify one individual athlete for the upcoming regional meet as Landri Glover excelled in the triple jump with her best mark of 31/6” in the triple jump was good enough for a solid fourthplace finish.

Although the San Saba girls’ 4x100-meter relay team placed fifth in their event and was unable to qualify for regionals, the foursome of Glover, Lexy Amthor, Leslie Aguirre, and Macy Sebastain capped off a great season with a time of 54.08 seconds that had them edged out of a regional berth by fourth-place Junction.

Up next, San Saba track and field will have athletes compete on April 29-30 in the Class 2A Region 4 regional meet hosted by Texas A&M Kingsville at Javelina Stadium.
