The San Saba High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams each had a pair of games last week at home vs. Junction High School and on the road against rival Mason High School.

San Saba Lady Dillos

The Lady Dillos opened last week of District 29-2A action with a very easy 84-16 victory at home against the Junction Lady Eagles. It was absolute domination

It was absolute domination from start to finish for San Saba, who led by a whopping 40-6 margin at halftime and didn’t take their foot off the gas as the Lady Dillos handled business with a superb offensive gameplay and elite defense at all ends of the court.

Lady Dillos junior guard Lexy Amthor outscored the opposing Lady Eagles all by herself and led the Lady Dillos with a game-high 18 points, while senior forward Landri Glover had 13 points. San Saba freshman forward Cinzlea Stanton also scored 13 points for the Lady Dillos, while senior guard Jaedah Lambert also finished in double figures with 11 points of their own.

Unfortunately for San Saba, the Lady Dillos hit a bump in the road in a huge road game last Friday night at Mason High School in which their offense was kept in check.

In an extremely physical and hard-fought game for both teams, the Lady Dillos fought off a sluggish start in the first quarter but were able to climb back into it by cutting the Cowgirls’ lead to just 23-17 by halftime. However, Mason again used another rally in the third quarter to keep the Lady Dillos at bay in the second half. San Saba senior center Nojemi Martinez led the way in scoring for her team with 10 points, while Glover and Lambert added eight and seven points on the night, respectively.

These two teams will have another much-anticipated rematch on February 8, in San Saba for the final game of the regular season that could very well determine a district champion.

San Saba Dillos

As for the San Saba boys varsity hoops squad, the Dillos handled their own business on Tuesday night at home as they cruised to a 43-22 win vs. the Junction Eagles.

In a game dominated by San Saba’s defense, the offense did plenty to give the Dillos a comfortable lead down the stretch. Dillos senior guard Reagan Mejia led all scorers with 12 points, while junior forward Lane Miller and senior guard Drake Bryant scored eight and seven points on the night, respectively.

On Friday evening on the road against district rival Mason High School, the Dillos got a bit of a scare despite coming away with an important 43-39 victory. The Dillos, who led by a 29-15 margin at halftime, had to fight off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Punchers. Mason would be able to get the deficit to within just 41-39 in the closing minute of regulation, but Mejia was able to sink a pair of clutch free throws in the closing seconds to secure the victory.
