The San Saba High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams both picked up wins this past week in District 29-2A play.

Lady Dillos

On January 18, on the road at district rival Goldthwaite High School, the San Saba girls team again played stellar defense throughout the night as the Lady Dillos kept the Lady Eagles at bay with a crucial 45-34 victory.

The Lady Dillos were led by superb team defense, which forced the Lady Eagles to commit a plethora of turnovers and completely disrupt Goldthwaite’s offensive rhythm. In a solid offensive effort against a very good Goldthwaite team, the Lady Dillos were led in scoring by the duo of senior forward Landri Glover and junior guard Madison Shahan with 11 points each.

Friday night’s contest was much easier for the Lady Dillos as Glover led San Saba to a dominant 63-18 victory at home against Johnson City High School. The Lady Dillos were in complete control all night, quickly jumping out to a 20-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and a commanding 38-4 advantage by halftime.

In the process, Glover reached the 1,000-point scoring milestone over her great four-year career on the court with the Lady Dillos. Glover and Shahan again led the Lady Dillos in scoring with 12 points apiece, while junior guard Lexy Amthor also scored in double figures with 10 points on the night.

The San Saba girls squad has a huge district showdown on Tuesday night on the road at Harper High School that will break a three-way tie for first place in District 29-2A between San Saba, Harper, and Mason High School.

Dillos

Unfortunately for the Dillos, their undefeated run in District 29-2A came to an end at Goldthwaite on January 18, as San Saba lost a 52-48 overtime heartbreaker. Despite San Saba having a small lead for most of the game, the Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter and then had the upper hand in overtime by knocking down clutch free throws. San Saba standout senior guard Reagan Mejia led all scorers with a game-high 19 points in the close loss, while junior forward Dylan Ware scored nine points of his own.

However, the Dillos managed to get back on track in a big way later in the week with a huge 63-31 victory at home vs. Johnson City. In addition to fantastic team defense holding the Eagles to just a mere 31 points, the Dillos had a two-man wrecking crew on offense with Mejia scoring a game-high 26 points with Ware being almost unstoppable in the paint with 20 points.
