Dillos suffer their first District loss

It was a tough night of football for the Armadillos (2-4 1-1 in district) as they fell to the Coleman Bluecats (5-1, 2-0 in district) 40-26. The Dillos kept the game tight through three quarters of play but could not overcome the injuries that plagued the team in the second half. San Saba now looks ahead to another tough matchup next week and look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they play the De Leon Bearcats (51, 2-0 in district play). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Rogan Field.

Offensive Leaders

Ethan Gonzales eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the season as he rushed for 158 yards on 28 carries (5.6 avg) and three rushing scores. Skylar Romero had three big receptions for 97 yards (32.3 avg) and one receiving touchdown. Miller and Lackey split time at the QB position due to Miller being injured in the first half. Lackey rushed for 12 yards on four carries and was two of four passing for 29 yards. Miller’s first-half stats where three of six passing for 71 yards and one passing score and rushed for 12 yards on five carries.

Defensive Leaders

Romero picked off his team leading 3rd and 4th interceptions of the season during the game and recorded three tackles. Linebacker Alex Estrada lead the team in tackles with 12 and a fumble recovery. Alex Aguirre chipped in with eight tackles followed by Winton Lackey with seven. Logan McHam and Cash Bryant also contributed to the defensive efforts with five tackles each.

1st Quarter –

8:15 – Coleman wins the coin toss and takes the ball and their opening drive 50 yards for the first score of the game. Two-point conversion was no good. 6-0 Bluecats.

1:07 – After a San Saba punt, Coleman moves the ball to the two-yard line where they punched the ball in for the score. Two-point conversion is no good. 12-0 Bluecats.

At the end of the first quarter: San Saba 0 – Coleman 12

 2nd Quarter –

7:27 – San Saba picks up their first score of the night when Miller connects with Gonzales on an eight- yard screen pass. PAT is no good. 12-6 Bluecats.

2:11 – After San Saba’s Alex Aguirre recovers an onside kick, the Dillos move the ball down to the four-yard line, from there, Gonzales plows his way into the end zone. PAT is no good. 12-12.

:26 – Coleman puts together a 60-yard drive in the last minutes of the half to take the lead. Two-point conversion is no good. 18-12 Bluecats.

3rd Quarter –

10:12 – The lone score of the quarter comes way of a 43-yard pass from Coleman. Two-point conversion is no good. 26-12 Bluecats.

After 3 quarters of play: San Saba 12 – Coleman 26

4th Quarter

11:54 – The Bluecats begin to pull away when they score a touchdown on a 30-yard pass. Two-point conversion is good, 34-12 Bluecats.

7:59 – Lackey runs an option play off the left side and pitches the ball out to Gonzales who scampers 35 yards for the score. Two-point conversion is no good. 34-18 Coleman.

6:03 – The depleted Dillo defense just can’t keep the Cats out of the end zone as they once again score from the air on an 18-yard pass. Two-point conversion is no good. 40-18 Bluecats.

3:35 – San Saba puts six more points on the board when Gonzales hits his stride right down the middle of the defense and scores from 40 yards out. Two-point conversion is good. 40-26 Coleman.
