Battle of the River – The 106th Edition

The earliest recorded season of football for the Armadillos comes during the fall of 1916. Although, I will say, other records indicate there may have been other matches played. No mention of the game of football has been reported in the local newspaper. So, for now, we will say that the Dillos are playing their 107th season of football. Throughout the last 107 years, the Dillos have faced off against more the 109 opponents. Opponents such as Richland Springs, Cherokee and Rochelle are games from a bygone era while Brady, Llano and Mason are old rivals that the Dillos played year in and year out all the way up into the early 2000’s. Does anyone remember playing the School for the Deaf in 1945? There is one common opponent every generation can remember playing, and that of course is the Goldthwaite Eagles. The “Battle of the River” is a unique one to say the least; being just 22 miles away it is easy to see why the two teams have faced off 105 times over the last century. This is the 103rd year the two teams have played (several times back in the 20’s and 30’s the teams played twice) and have played every year since 1947. You could almost call it an ancient rivalry, one that will be played for generations to come. And now your useless (but always good to know) facts about the game!
