Body

One on the longest running rivalries will be played this Friday at Eagle Stadium when the San Saba Armadillos (5-3) take on the Goldthwaite Eagles (07). This will be the 100th YEAR the two teams have played but the 105th time the rivals have battled it out on the gridiron. Trying to clarify how the teams have played 104 times, yet this is the 100th year, can be a little confusing, but let us try and throw some numbers out and see if we can make sense of it. The first game was played in 1916...there were no games played from 1917-1921...in 1922 the series started up again with halts in play in 1947 and 1952...confused yet? If not just keep reading... during the early years of the series the Armadillos and Eagles played twice in one year in 1923, ’29, ’30, ’33 and 1939. When added all together, that puts the teams squaring off 104 times. I am certain there is someone out there with enough time to double check the math, and I encourage you to do so and get back to me. Ok, back to the game in hand, Dillos vs Eagles, Battle of the River take 105 (or 100?). This year’s game will have more meaning to both teams as it is no more than bragging rights for the next year. Let us look at some useless (but always good to know) facts about the game.

First game 1916 - San Saba won 43-6.

Overall record

San Saba leads the series 60-40-4

Win/Loss at Goldthwaite San Saba is 22-17-2

Largest win 79-0 – 2018

Largest defeat 48-0-1995

Longest win streak (7) 1977-1983 Longest losing streak

(7) 2004-2010.

San Saba has won three out of the last four meetings.

*** Bonus useless fact

Coach Locklear (1930-1946) has the honor of most wins over Goldthwaite with 12.

San Saba comes into the game 5-3 with 216 points being scored (27 ppg) and allowed 223 points (27.8). The winless Eagles have scored 66 points (9.4 avg) in seven games and allowed 292 points (41.7 ppg). What is on the line – PRIDE. San Saba is on the outside looking in as far as playoffs go and a 0-7 Goldthwaite team is looking to pick up their first win of the season. A win for either team will not be considered an upset like the years past, but a sixth win for the Dillos or a first win for the Eagles will be big momentum going into the next year.
