Some Thoughts on Trust

Psalm 56 has several important things in it that we need to meditate on. This Psalm was written when the Philistines had captured David at Gath. The prayer he offered in this Psalm was for deliverance and trust.

David said in verse 3, “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.” Any time fear overtakes us, it is important to remember that God is bigger than any problem we have. When you fear, do you trust in yourself or in your abilities to overcome them? Do you trust in your wealth, family, friends? Or do you trust in the One who can calm those fears?

In verse 4, he stated, “In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?” David praised and trusted God. Because of that, he was not afraid of what any man might do to him. He asked the question, “What can mere man do to me?” We need to realize that we do not have to be afraid of man. Yes, men may be able to take our lives, but they can never destroy the relationship we have with God. Therefore, our fear should be to the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell (Matthew 10:28)

In verse 9, David assures us, “Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; this I know, that God is for me.” There was never any doubt with David that God was for him. Too many times we see God rescuing David, or giving him strength to endure the trials he was facing. Whether it be the enemies he fought, King Saul, or even his son Absalom, he knew that God was for him. Is that true in your life today? Do you have the assurance that God is for you and wants you to succeed? This does not mean it will be a trouble-free life, but when the storms of life come, each of us can know that God is there and cares for us, if we put our trust in Him.

In verse 11, David once again states what he believes to be true,

“In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?” God is trustworthy. The person who is willing to place their trust in God does not have to be afraid. And since that is true, what can man do to the one who trusts in His Creator? Naturally there is more in this Psalm, so read it and digest it and let it give you strength for your life.

May we never fear what others can do to us. May we always be dependent upon our God and only trust in Him. As we do, He will bless our lives.
