The Richland Springs Report

Christianity’s most sacred holiday was celebrated around the world last Sunday. The Passover and sacrifice of Jesus on the cross holds the promise of eternal life of all who believe and accept His sacrifice and deity. There’s no cleaning up, no works to be done, only acceptance. We have incorporated a pagan feast in with this holiness called Easter. Like Halloween, it was an early attempt to bring Indigenous populations around the world into the fold of Christianity. So, this Sunday, as we honored and rejoiced over the gift of Jesus, we also went to the park and hunted Easter eggs. I can tell you that in Richland Springs, we had about 20 children and somewhere between 500-800 eggs. There will be many sugar highs this coming week. Sunday is a momentous day.

Last Friday, the high school had a track meet in Meridian. I have not seen any results yet. The girl’s district golf meet was on the first of April. April 2nd is the junior high track meet in San Saba, and April 2nd and 3rd will be the high school track meet in San Saba. April 4th is the district golf tournament for the high school boys. April 5th is the UIL Academics District event hosted by Rochelle. Next Monday is the solar eclipse. There is no telling how that will impact our county.

The next two weeks are STAAR testing weeks. Please make sure your students go to bed on time and eat healthy meals. April 10th will be a tennis meet in Mason, and April 11th is a high school track meet in Blanket. April 12-13 is the Area one act play competition. Richland Springs is the alternate team to this event.

Looking ahead, please sign up for the annual blood drive on April 23rd. Questions about appointments can be answered by Nurse Poe at the school. This event was one of the first blood drives I attended in 2006. The turnout is usually outstanding.

I have my garden all planted except for the okra. My okra seeds are still in their germinating pots. It’s nice having a place close by to buy my plants. Chrissy and Bobby have some beautiful plants for sale. I’m sure I could get my plants for free, but I don’t think that would be very fair for a new business to try to make a profit. RS BoHo Unique has a great display of boots in their window. If I had anywhere fancy to go, I would buy those silver studded boots. They are bling and then some. If you haven’t tried the food at the Coyote Store you are missing some good eats. Don’t forget to shop at Skelton’s Hardware, The Feedlot, and Arabella Designs has some impressive wreaths. I have the one I made hanging at my door. I intend to go to the next clinic that Dee Crump presents. I say all of that to encourage you to shop locally. Hair It Is cleans me up every six weeks or so and McKinnerney Real Estate is there for your real estate needs.

Speaking of real estate, Franky Soto gave me a tour of the old Methodist Church that he and his partner renovated into a beautiful three-bedroom, two bath home. What an incredible makeover. I didn’t realize it had such a big lot to go with the house. It’s sad that a church had to shut its doors, but in this age of people who don’t find church important, it’s not a surprise. Now, this church shut down quite some time ago. Russ’s mom Clifton was a member of the church until it closed. Please make time for your favorite church.

Our church body and many community members have been praying for Kathy Brockman. She is in the hospital with serious issues. Her mom Nona was a pillar of this little community, and until this illness, Kathy could be found involved in many community activities. There are many others on the prayer list. Charlie Clayton fell and broke his leg. He is waiting for the doctor’s report for instructions. Our pastor, Brother Mack, is still on the border ministering to our troops. We need prayers for our government, legislators, and president. Most of us have heard that no religious symbols were to be on the Easter eggs at the White House and instead of celebrating Good Friday, the day was designited for something other than Christian values. This is a Christian country, and we may not all go to church, but most of us believe in Biblical principles.

Stand strong America, we will overcome. This government of the people by the people was a dream that was echoed by Dr. King in his famous speech, “I have a dream.” Don’t give up, keep working and praying. Most of all, pray for our precious troops and their families.
