The children and staff of Cherokee Home recently experienced a day we will never forget during a special visit to The Preserve in Fredericksburg, thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Preserve.The hands-on educational experience introduced our group to three remarkable Asian elephants!

This time last year, we were reporting roads closed, areas evacuated, updates on volunteer help. And we had help coming from all over the country. There were updates on businesses that were closed due to flooding. At least one business never reopened because the devastation was too great.

The end of an era, jail decommissioned

San Saba has the oldest working jail in the U.S. Until last year, that is.Yes, we can boast of that fact. It says so on the historical marker in front of the jail.The San Saba County Commissioners Court voted to decommission the jail this week in their July 20, 2026, meeting. It was a somber moment.

91-year-old San Saba County Native and “Pecan Icon” Wins State

Jackie Brister of Bend, is the 2026 State Commercial Division Champion with his Choctaw variety pecan. Judging was held in San Marcos with some stiff competition. It started at the county show, where Jackie won first in several categories and Reserve Success.

Burn Ban reinstated by Court

The Commissioners Court met Monday, July 20th, for their regular meeting. Even though we have received some rain, it is still very dry in many places in the county. They voted to reinstate the Burn Ban.

Mason & San Saba July 16, 2026Receipts totaled 1,195 head and were reduced due to the good rains that fell throughout the area. The futures board continued to move down this week after last weeks higher market.
