SSGC - Rainwater Catchment

San Saba Garden Club met Tuesday, March 3rd, at the lovely ranch home of Larry and Catherine Hanrahan for our monthly meeting. The program, Rainwater Catchment, was presented by Larry, who designed and implemented their system to capture and filter given rainwater from their 3,000 square foot metal rooftops. The system provides the sole water source for their home. Attendees viewed the gutters, downspouts, water tanks, pump, and filtration scheme after learning of the network and an interesting key fact: 1000 sq. ft. of roof surface area will collect 600 gallons of rainwater in a 1-inch rainfall!

Rhonda Killion and Jan Vanderburg were hostesses for our group of 13 members serving delicious cucumber and chicken salad crescent roll sandwiches, charcuterie skewers, cupcakes, and chocolate coins and kisses with a Saint Patrick's Day theme.

In the business meeting led by co-presidents, Cindy Sloan and Marjean Alexander, it was announced that our club has reached a monetary level that would allow work to begin on the renovation of our historic clubhouse!

Contract bids are being obtained and/or revised. Recent monies from applied grants have made this possible. The Fundraising Committee led by Trudy Hughes includes Jan Beaver, Susan Kissko, Sarah Lott, Karen Sloan, and Janis Murray. They have worked tirelessly in gathering funds in various ways. Now the Clubhouse Rebuilding Committee will take plans a step further as work begins. Chairman for this committee is Dianna Furlan with Rhonda Killion, Donna McKinney, Juanita Profitt, and Jan Vanderburg serving in this capacity.

In other business, co-presidents reported they and Debbie Shahan traveled to Temple March 2nd for the District V Spring meeting. There we learned that our San Saba Elementary School children's poster, poetry, and sculpture contest participants had fared well at the District V competition. We will soon learn the names of the winners and will make presentations to these talented kiddos! The yard of the month committee will be active soon as it looks like spring weather is prevalent these days.

Appreciation was given to Tina Gunter who organized a cleanup day at Mill Pond Park recently.

Plans for supplies for school grub sacks, memorials for past members, participation in San Saba's USA Independence Day celebration Saturday, July 4th, and our club's 90th Birthday year celebration were all discussed.

The meeting adjourned to visiting and exploring.

San Saba Garden Club welcomes new members! Our next meeting will be held at 2 p.m., April 7, at the First Presbyterian Church. Contact membership chairman, for more Denise Mayfield, 325-205-2025, information.
