The San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) held its November meeting at the home of member Donna McKinney in anticipation of the hands-on workshop that was Part Two of McKinney’s October presentation. Her topic was planning, planting, and caring for home gardens that reflect the gardener’s preferences and lift the spirits not only of the household but of visitors and passersby as well.
Sixteen members, one emeritus, and guest Carol Gibson enjoyed a delightful afternoon that began with refreshments of chicken salad croissants and goodie bags filled with cookies, macaroons, and candied pecans. Hostess were Barbara Bell, Rhonda Killion, Sandra McCrary, and Jan Vanderburg.
President Debbie Shahan called the meeting to order, with Rhonda Killion offering the opening prayer and Social Services Chair Janis Murray leading the Club Collect and Creed. Regular business included approving the previous meeting's minutes and updates on financials and yearbook additions.
Guest Carol Gibson provided details about the Youth Fair scheduled for the week of December 9. Volunteers are needed for various tasks, including project check-in and judging. Interested individuals can contact the county extension office for more information.
Several committees reported on their recent endeavors. The Civic Beautification Committee announced the successful October 19 City-Wide Clean-Up. The Community Service Committee informed the club that Clearview Family Resources needed financial assistance to finish their landscaping. A motion was made, seconded, and passed by SSGC to contribute $200. The Entertainment Committee shared plans for the members’ 'Country Cozy Christmas' party on December 3, at which time the club will adopt a family for the holidays.
Donna McKinney’s workshop was certainly a highlight of the afternoon. Members toured her yard, admiring the planning and dedication behind her picturesque fall garden filled with zinnias and butterfly-attracting plants. McKinney is an excellent communicator with a wealth of information, welcoming questions from less-experienced gardeners eager to learn how to produce thriving flowers and plants in our sometimeschallenging environment.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn by Sarah Lott, seconded by Rhonda Killion. Members look forward to the fellowship and camaraderie of their upcoming Christmas party, as well as continued participation in community activities.
