The San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) held its first meeting of the 2024-25 year on September 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Mill Pond Park SSGC Clubhouse.
Hostesses Sarah Lott (chair), Susan Kisko, and Jan Beaver provided a light lunch for 19 members and one guest, Juanita Profitt. Jan Beaver’s home-grown figs were the highlight, complemented by an array of fresh fruit, sausage balls, crackers and cream cheese with fig sauce, fig and apple cheese stacks, snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, and a spiced fig bundt cake. Lemonade and iced tea were also served.
President Debbie Shahan called the meeting to order and presented the year’s first program, “President’s Year at a Glance.” Shahan highlighted the 2024- 25 yearbook and acknowledged the club’s ongoing projects over the summer. These included the Executive Committee’s successful efforts to find an air conditioning solution, the Community Services Committee’s work designing and commissioning a plaque for longtime Park supervisor and staunch SSGC supporter Farrel Whitley, and various projects undertaken by the Community Service Committee to keep San Saba beautiful. Notable initiatives included reviving the Keyhole Garden at San Saba Rehabilitation Center and assisting with the landscaping at Clearview Resources.
The next meeting will be on October 1st at 2:00 p.m., featuring a workshop titled “Landscaping Your Surroundings,” led by member Donna McKinney. Note in this week’s newspaper and additional presentation the San Saba Garden Club will be hosting at 4 p.m. that same day!
Founded in 1936, the San Saba Garden Club has long been a cornerstone of the community, embodying the spirit of generosity, ingenuity, determination, and good will.
