San Saba Pro Rodeo Days Aug. 18th & 19th

The San Saba Rodeo and Livestock Association is excited to announce the 85th annual rodeo.

The first official San Saba Rodeo was held on June 30 – July 1,1938, and was sponsored by the San Saba Junior Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, several other organizations have sponsored or helped to promote the rodeo and to keep this time honored tradition alive.

As many of us can remember, the rodeo was held on Rogan field for many years. Sand was hauled in, bucking chutes and roping boxes were set up and everyone looked forward to “The Rodeo” every summer. After the rodeo was over and the arena was taken down, sand was removed, and the field was prepared for the upcoming football season. The current arena was constructed in 1974 with volunteer labor and primarily donated materials. Improvements and upgrades over the years have also been accomplished through volunteer efforts.

The 85th San Saba Pro Rodeo Days will be August 18th and 19th.

The rodeo will be produced by Johnny Hoyle’s Cadillac Rodeo Company. Performances will begin Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m., and gates will open at 6 p.m.

Professional contestants will be competing in traditional events.

Children 8 years old and under 80 lbs. are invited to compete in Mutton Bustin’. There will be a $5 entry fee for each rider.

Bicycles will be awarded to winners of the calf scramble each night by Capital Farm Credit.

Legendary “Funny man” and Cowboy Hall of Fame rodeo clown, Leon Coffee, will be here to entertain fans.

The Texas Spirit Riders of Winnsboro, Texas, will be performing each night with their amazing, choreographed maneuvers on horseback. Prepare to be dazzled.

The county team roping will be on Wednesday night, August 16th, and includes competitors from San Saba and all adjoining counties. Books open at 6 p.m., and roping will begin at 7 p.m. Contact Morgan Gilger for further information @ 325 372-8654.

The San Saba County Young Farmers will be providing the concessions with a delicious menu and treats. Their proceeds go to helping the annual livestock show for the youth of San Saba County. Please help support their efforts.

The rodeo parade will be on Saturday morning, August 19th, at 10 a.m. Grand Marshall of the parade will be Leon Coffee, everyone’s favorite rodeo clown. We would like to encourage local participation of exhibitors, horseback riders and parade spectators. Prizes will be awarded for numerous categories including Best Dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl and Youngest Rider. Please contact Sara McCoury for information @ 325 3721550. Volunteer help is always appreciated.

There will be a dance featuring Branded Heart immediately following the Saturday night rodeo. Your rodeo ticket will also be admission to the dance. This event is sponsored by Hoffpauir Ranch and Supply.

Plan to bring your friends and family out to enjoy the tradition of rodeo at the 85th annual San Saba Rodeo and Parade.
