Since the 1970s when the San Saba Garden Club actually received the memorial marker, the local club has honored the service and sacrifices of American Veterans each year on November 11th, Veterans Day. The decorated Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker, located on the highway near Risien Park on US Hwy. 190, honors all veterans for their service to the United States. The historic practice of Blue Star Memorial Highway designations was a program started in 1945 after World War II by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, now known as the National Garden Clubs, Inc., to pay tribute to returning veterans from WW II. Since that time, the program has expanded to celebrate and recognize veterans of all US armed conflicts.
