Rotary Minute

Our speaker at theAugust 17th meeting was Jefferson Stencil who presented his Eagle Scout Project for 2023 about Mr. Heywood Lane Edwards, a WWII Naval Officer and graduate of San Saba High School. Jefferson wanted to do this Eagle Scout Project to promote more information about the life of Heywood Lane Edwards through a memorial and dedication display at the museum.

Heywood Lane Edwards was born at home in San Saba on November 9, 1905, and died at age 35 on October 31 1941, at sea. He was a Naval Commander of his ship USS Reuben James, Destroyer, from April 6, 1940, to his death on October 31, 1941. He was one of the first casualties of WWII, more than a month before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1926. He served on Battleship Florida, cruiser Reno, and other ships including submarines. During the summer of 1928, he was captain of the US Freestyle Olympic Wrestling Team. He placed 4th .

Beth Griess made a motion for SS Rotary to make a $250 donation made out to the SS County Museum for Jefferson’s Eagle Scout Project. Motion passed.
