The regularly scheduled weekly luncheon meeting of the San Saba Rotary was held Thursday, November 16th, Marcus Wood presiding. Twelve members and eight guests were present.
San Saba National Honor Society student guest was Leia Kilman who is a senior who plans to attend Angelo State University and major in Biology and Premed.
Other guests present were Christos DeSalerno and his wife, Noelle Montag (new owners of Bear Winery, formerly the Alamosa Winery and prospective Rotarians); Lynn Blankenship; David Jenkins; Coach Nicole Walts; and Deputy Sheriff Reid Dailey (also a prospective Rotarian).
Business items discussed include the November 30th Christmas Party to be held with the Brady, Texas Rotary organization and upcoming Rotary meetings, including a December 7th presentation on African Safaris.
Presenter San Saba Deputy Ian Merriman, who works in drug enforcement, has recently trained with his new canine partner, K9 Officer Andor, a Belgian Malinois, 76 pounds, who was donated to the San Saba Sheriff’s Department. Andor and Deputy Merriman are trained to work together in finding missing persons and items, in identifying various narcotics including meth, heroin, marijuana. When Andor tracks and finds drugs or a lost individual, he is trained to lie down beside the individual or item and to wait for his human partner. His sense of smell is 1,000 times more sensitive than humans, and he enjoys searching automobiles and outdoor sites for drugs and other items. Trained from a puppy, he is considered an actual law enforcement officer and to tease or disregard him after two warnings from his human partner is a second degree felony. Andor now happily resides and goes everywhere with his human partner, Deputy Merriman. A great addition to local law enforcement!
