Parvo is on the rise in San Saba according to San Saba Animal Hospital. San Saba County Friends of Animals wants to raise awareness and educate the community to help prevent the spread of the deadly virus and help save lives.
What is Parvo?
Parvo is a very contagious, sometimes deadly virus that affects puppies and adult dogs. It attacks their gastrointestinal system, which causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and weakness. It most often affects puppies, but adult dogs can also get Parvo as well.
It is extremely important to get immediate medical help if your dog shows any symptoms of Parvo.
How do you Prevent Parvo?
Vaccinate your puppy or dog on time. Puppies need three sets of vaccinations that are spaced four weeks apart.
Avoid taking unvaccinated dogs to areas where other dogs gather. Parvo can survive for over a year even in an area that has been disinfected. This means if your dog goes into an area like Mill Pond Park, the sidewalks on Wallace St. or your neighbors yard, and another dog that was infected was there prior, your dog could get the virus. Vaccinations are so important for this reason.
