Local students selected for prestigious Boys State and Girls State programs

The Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 of the American Legion is proudly sponsoring two San Saba High School students to participate in the renowned Boys State and Girls State programs this summer, offering them a unique opportunity to dive into the world of government and citizenship.

Jefferson Stencil, a junior at San Saba High School, will attend the American Legion Boys State program at the University of Texas in Austin from June 8th to June 13th. The son of John and Amy Stencil, Jefferson will join other top high school students in a hands-on experience that brings government to life. Boys State is celebrated as one of the most selective and respected educational programs for young men, immersing participants in the operations of local, county, and state government. Through simulations and a “learn by doing” approach, students gain a deep understanding of the democratic process and the value of active civic participation.

Meanwhile, Mary Jane Cantu, daughter of Jules and Alan P. Schroeder, will attend the Girls State program at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas, from June 15th to June 21st. This nonpartisan program is designed to inspire young women with a passion for responsible citizenship and a love for “God and Country.” Participants step into the shoes of government officials through interactive simulations, learning firsthand how state and local systems operate. Since its inception, Girls State has empowered nearly one million young people to explore the inner workings of democracy, preparing them to become future leaders rooted in patriotism and Americanism.

Both programs are dedicated to shaping informed, engaged citizens who understand the democratic process and the republic form of government at state and national levels. For Jefferson and Mary Jane, this summer promises to be a transformative experience, equipping them with leadership skills and a stronger connection to their community and country.

The Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 is honored to support these outstanding students as they represent San Saba in these esteemed programs.
