Hello there, San Saba loves! Well mom and I had quite the week! Now we all agree mom is not the proverbial “dizzy” blonde as the saying goes. However, dizzy she very often gets, and clumsy she has been all her life. Put those two together, and disaster ensues! Mom got up in the middle of the night, tripped, her head hit and broke the television screen; and her arm hit something else and it was sliced right down it! Mom is on blood thinners so to say her arm became a red water faucet is understatement; the woman was a mess! She is fine, and we have a new television - but I watch her carefully every single time she gets up to move those big feet of hers! I even suggested she use her hands as an extra pair of feet and emulate me for safety purposes. She is hardheaded though, and the proof was in our broken TV!
I would like to thank Mandy Finch so much for the amazing care she showed mom. The ambulance people were very dismissive and failed to do their job. Mandy came over the next day to remove the stuck bandages, apply healing treatment and to re-wrap mom’s arm. I have to say, I saw the paramedic side of her very upset and angry. Our friend Kathy Saucillo brought mom a cane to use so that when she is dizzy and has difficulty steadying herself, she will have help. Mom is getting old, and it is making me a bit sad. Later that evening, mom explained to me how important caring and pride in your work is… your work ethic. She told me even when she was a volunteer legal advocate for The Dove Project, she gave all she possibly could in order to improve the lives of those who needed her help. She laughed then, and told me even in jobs she despised such as insurance law, she gave them all she had! She said she hopes the young paramedics will learn that all their patients matter. My job is to care about mom…I have an amazing work ethic, and I think she would quite agree!
Some magic happened at our house! Again, Mandy came over and put up this magic door that keeps the bugs out, but I can go through all by myself!! Mom can keep the front door open, let the fresh air in, and it is so wonderful! I have found independence is a freeing experience and empowering as well. Dachshunds have a tendency toward stubbornness and having the ability to control my own time spent out on the porch is just the ticket! It is different than ordering my own food because I don’t actually do the preparation myself.
I am not sure if mom’s brain got jiggled when it hit the TV, but she bought me sweaters for cooler weather! If she thinks I am wearing them, well, she best go have her head examined! She made me try them on to see if they fit, and the woman now knows what it is like to wrestle a bear! When she would grab a leg to put in an arm hole. I would wriggle my head out and head for the door, and when she tried to put it back over my head, I acted as if I no longer had a neck with which to hold it up!! Oh, I knew what I was doing and that she would soon not throw in the towel, but throw the stupid dog clothes in a drawer and might I just say… they look lovely there!
Mom has this little roller thing with sticky paper on it. She goes around the house rolling across the furniture and then every few seconds, peeling away paper to expose a new layer of sticky paper. I asked her the other day what sort of daft thing she was doing, and she answered…“Rolling for pieces of Lenny!” It seems that thing picks up dog hair expertly. I nodded toward mom for her to continue and said…fine, just please do not mistake me for a footstool. I do not care for the nickname “Baldy!”
The cooler temperatures have been pleasant, but as usual, mom brought out the long sleeves and sweaters. We sure hope each of you have the most amazing week! I will talk to you next week! Love, Lenny
