Lenny's Life Lessons

Happy August, San Saba loves!

Another new month, and oh wow! The kids go back to school this week! By the way, I asked mom if I could go to school, and you all may have heard her laughter…it was that loud. When she could actually stop laughing and breathe again, she says to me…“Lenny, I love you more than life; however, you would not survive two seconds in a classroom! Students are not allowed to jump out of their seats, grab an apple off a teacher’s desk and run down the hall with it, run to the windows and bark at all the little kids, or go around the cafeteria eating all their meals! Yeah, you would not survive at all!” I did not really listen to her; I was busy eating a cricket!

Speaking of crickets, they are not as bad as grasshoppers! When mom and I are walking in the yard, they jump on her shirt, in her hair, and when we go inside, they just invite themselves in as if our house is theirs! I get upset when the neighborhood cats get in my yard, but at least they have the decency to respect that the front door is there for good reason! Don’t misunderstand, I am a very loving, friendly dachshund, but unless they land in a bowl of mom’s potato soup which then would make it a bowl of MY potato soup, they can please stay outside!

Mandy has brand new baby puppies!! I want one!! What mom? “I need one like I need a 20-foot giraffe in the yard?” Oh wow! Can we get one of those too?? My sweet, San Saba friends? Where does one send moms for attitude adjustments around here?

Mom was brushing my hair the other day and told me… “little boy, flirt with the dirt, and in the tub you will get a scrub!” I licked her forehead to see if she was burning with fever or actually thought she was being funny and clever! I am glad she setup her writing space this week because no one on this planet or any other would believe the woman was a serious novelist at one point in her life!

I asked mom why she stayed in Texas when her siblings live in places like Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Colorado? She smiled, clicked her heels together and repeated…“there’s no place like home!” I think I understand completely because I sure have come to feel that way about living here in San Saba. My heart leaps, and so do I, every time I see a friend drive up, our sweet mailman leaves me a treat, or someone says they love me because of a note I leave on The Forum.

Happy August, sweet friends; have a wonderful school year, dear teachers and students. Learn from each other, grow with each other, make life better because of each other. We love you…
