As temps rise for the summer, we'd like to remind pet owners to take precautions to keep their furry companions safe and comfortable. Dogs and cats are vulnerable to overheating, heat stroke and dehydration.
Here are tips to keep your pets cool and healthy.
1. Never leave pets in parked cars. Even with the windows cracked on an 85 degree day, a car can reach 120 degrees in under 10 minutes 2. Limit outdoor activity. Early mornings and late evenings are the safest times for walks and play. Short nose breeds, overweight and elderly animals are particular to overheating.
3. Protect paws from hot surfaces. Pavement, asphalt and sand can become dangerously hot and burn your pets paws. A good rule of thumb- if its too hot for your hand its too hot for their paws.
4. Provide plenty of fresh water and shade. Hydration is very important in hot weather. Make sure your pets always have access to clean cool water. If your pet spends time outside provide shade and never rely on a dog house alone. They too can trap in heat.
5. If its too hot for you, its probably too hot for your pet.
Pets rely on us to protect them, and a few steps can make all the difference in preventing tragedy.
