40 Years Ago April 7, 1983

The San Saba High School boys golf team added yet another tournament victory to their collection recently by bringing home eight trophies from the Eastland Kiwanis Golf Tournament played at the Lake Side Country Club in Eastland. Eleven AA schools were represented at the tournament.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zapata III of San Saba announce the birth of a son, Frank Zapata IV, on March 28 in Brownwood Regional Hospital. He weighed eight pounds.

Incumbent Lynn Hamrick received an unofficial 223 votes in last school board election, followed by George Kidd III who garnered 189 votes, earning both men a seat on the San Saba Independent School District Board of Trustees.

Kay Sullivan Carney recently returned home to Chilechiape, Indonesia after spending several weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Sullivan of San Saba. Mrs. Carney left for Austin where she caught a plane for Hong Kong. After staying in China overnight, Mrs. Carney traveled to Jacarda where she was met by her husband and son.

Diane Senterfitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Senterfitt of San Saba, was recently named as one of 969 students listed on the 1982 fall semester honor roll in the College of Business Administration at The University of Texas at Austin.

Andy Broyles of Cherokee took first place at the Open Amateur Bullfighting Competition at Bastrop. The rodeo bullfighters from various parts of the state fought two bulls each for sixty seconds apiece. Contestants were judged on a scale of 1 to 50, as were the bulls. Andy received a total of 131 points on his two bulls.

20 Years Ago April 3, 2003

Chance Edwards, Freshman at Stephen F. Austin and formerly of San Saba, qualified for the Texas Relays at Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. He will be running the 4x1500 Relay.

Effective April 5, 2003, the region of Texas currently served by the 915 area code will split three ways and go into permissive dialing. The new area codes will be 432 and 325. Callers should start using the new area codes as of April 5, 2003.

On April 5th the new Texas Historical Marker at the courthouse will be dedicated recognizing the United Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy of San Saba County.

Spring is officially here but you would never know it from the cold wind that blew in Friday night. It was 23 degrees Sunday morning with frost. The large mesquite trees are leafing out now. The bluebonnets along FM 765 and 502 are getting prettier everyday. We received 1.9 inches of rain in the month of March giving us a total of 5.1 for the year so far.

In 1st round district golf, team standings for March 25, 2003: 1. San Saba 365, 2. Jim Ned 449, 3. Coleman 557. San Saba scores all listed in medalist. Medalist: 1. Margaret Whitten-San Saba-81; 2 Christina Cisneroz and Tina Rogers-San Saba-91; 5. Dana Owens and Sable Paredez-San Saba-102.

LCRAand Central Texas Electric Co-op awarded a $23,700.00 grant to Cherokee ISD for new playground equipment. Children at Cherokee are making good use of the new playground equipment at the Cherokee School.

Lance Glover and his parents, Randy and Christine are so proud to announce the arrival of Linzie Grace. She was born March 2 in Clayton, New Mexico. She weighed 8 lbs., 10 1/2 oz. and was 20 inches long.
