80 Years Ago July 12, 1945

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Burleson, formerly of Austin, have opened the Hotel Coffee Shop and also plan to give service in the dining room to luncheon clubs and group meetings.

Intermittent rainfall failed to discourage a crowd of about 1,300 attending the American Legion, Boy and Girl Scout Rodeo on Rogan Field July 4th.

Mr. and Mrs. C. S. LeBlanc announce the birth of a son born July 4th. He was named Richard Leslie after his great-grandfather, Dick Jackson, and his uncle Leslie Crockett.

Well competition is the life of trade, so there is undergoing in the near future a new telephone line to the city of San Saba. It will be a rural system and you can have an orchestra in your home if you choose.

An all-feminine cast, guest list and sponsorship was featured here in the high school gym when San Saba’s newest organization, the Girl Scouts, presented a Mock Wedding and reception on the Prom Night program, under the direction of their leaders, Miss Nila Estep and Mrs. Vivian Handy. Over 150 ladies and young girls of the city and county were in attendance.

40 Years Ago July 11, 1985

Emily Whorton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Whorton of San Saba, recently competed in the Our Little Miss State competition and was named “Best Gymnast.”

The local golf course is a municipal course, open to the public. However, due to its increasing popularity, both local and out of town golfers must deal with overcrowding, particularly on weekends. San Saba Golf Assn. approved an additional nine holes that would not only ease the overcrowding but; more importantly, attract more out of town players. These guests to our city boost the local economy considerably with their purchases.

Ground breaking was held July 2, at the site of San Saba’s first apartment building complex on Highway 16 South. Mill Creek Square Ltd. will house 16 two bedroom and 8 one bedroom units. The units will each have central heat and air, carpet, appliances and be energy efficient. The complex will also house an office and a laundry.

Mr. and Mrs. Presley Adams were in Del Rio to help here sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie McNutt celebrate their 50th anniversary and attend the House reunion held in Del Rio.

San Saba County Judge Thomas Bowden presented Sesquicentennial Flags and certificates to representatives from Richland Springs, Bend, and San Saba. Each community has been designated as a Sesquicentennial Community.
