70 Years Ago May 12, 1955

Young and old mingled at Mill Pond Lake on the first day of the San Saba Fish Rodeo, but it was Kids’ Day and those 17 and older had to be satisfied with just looking on and offering advice to the youngsters who were pulling in the hungry bass and perch. Game Warden Junior L . Briggs kept an official eye on things.

Pat Linkenhoger and his sister, Linda, of Eastland spent the weekend in the home of their grandmother, Mrs. W. R. Baxter, and aunt, Miss Grace Baxter. Linkenhoger is a student in ACC in Abilene.

Rufus Cobern, San Saba High School senior, has been offered a full football scholarship at Howard Payne College, Brownwood, and has announced his intention of accepting the offer. Cobern played tackle for the Armadillos.

Douglas Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Adams of Pecan Grove, is completing his Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force. A graduate of San Saba High School in 1952, he is the winner of the boys’ scholarship.

San Saba Junior Boys won the district championship in playground ball at Mason in Interscholastic League competition. San Saba took the championship game from Mason, 14-4. Team members were Chico Rodriguez, pitcher: Glenn Gage, catcher; Dean Taff, short stop; Harlan Barker, first base; Larry Walker, second base; Martin Long, third base; Jimmy Eden, left field; Owen Parks, center field; and Felix Ramirez, right field. Dale Bagley coached the boys.

50 Years Ago May 15, 1975

Mrs. Margaret Miller and her music pupils presented a recital at the school for the elementary grades. The program was in observance of National Music Week.

Army Private Carl E. Woods recently completed the new “One Station Unit Training” (OSUT) provides basic and advance training with the same unit, on the same post. Pvt. Woods’ wife, Charlene, lives in San Saba.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association played the game of “Low Ball Partnership” at San Saba Municipal Golf Course. There was a tie for first place between the team of Wadene Ivy - Gladys Stewart and Frances Hill - Jymie Linzey. Winning third place was the team of Jeanette Askey and Dorothy Sterner.

Teddy Burnham gave his right arm a good workout by lifting a 40-pound yellowcat caught on a throw line baited with perch. The largest brought by the San Saba News & Star office so far this year has been a 51-pounder.

The Cherokee Indians came home from the State Championship Class B track meet with one third place and three fifth place finishes to conclude the track season this year. Rudy Garza won third place in the 880-yard run with a time of 1:58.1. Ruben Garza ran the mile in 4:37.0 and Manuel Beltran ran the 440-yard run in 51.7. The 440-yard relay team of Rudy Garza, Robert Soliz, Steve San Miguel and Beltran took fifth place with a time of 44.7.
