60 Years Ago April 15, 1965
Mr. and Mrs. Trinidad Flores and children of Los Angeles, Calif., came for a 10-day vacation visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Flores, and other relatives.
The hum of machinery in the street improvement is music to the ears. Commerce and Storey have received a coat of hot-topping. Now the jalopy glides over them riding like a Lincoln Continental. Thank you City of San Saba!
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sloan visited Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Sloan, Keith, Edwin and Becky, in Houston during the weekend. Floyd and Bobby attended the Astros-Yankee ball game in the Dome Stadium.
Mr. and Mrs. Truman Miles are the parents of James Frank, six pounds, 11 ounces, born April 11.
Mr. and Mrs. Ramario Ortiz are the parents of Carmela, seven pounds, 14 ounces, born April 11.
Bert Weatherby complains about the rescue grass in his new lawn on Dry Street. Buster Morrison on West Commerce, must be the envy of his fellowmen. He has a riding lawn mower. His oak studded lawn is a thing of beauty the year round. Highspot right now is the pansy bed. Gardeners, it would be worth your while to drive on West Dry Street to see the yucca (Mexican dagger) on the Russell lot. The clump has four tall spikes of creamy white flowers. The late B. R. Russell brought this plant from Mexico many years ago.
40 Years Ago April 18, 1985
The San Saba Golf teams competed in the District meet at Par Country Club in Proctor. The girls team placed first with a 397 score. The top medalists were all from the San Saba team. Kristi Sumpter was first with a 93; Melinda Walker, 2nd with a 100; Tonya Frisbee, 3rd with a 101 and Tana Burnham, 4th with a 103.
The family of Mrs. Kate Hector honored her on her 90th birthday with an afternoon party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hector. A daughter, Mrs. Lyndon Fleming of New Mexico and a son, Melvin Hector of Sloan Community helped her celebrate the occasion.
The High School girls track team competed in the Eagle relays. Sylvia Robertson won 1st place in the shot with a throw of 35’ 2”. She also placed 4th in the discus with throws of 102 feet. Kenna Boultinghouse placed 3rd in the long jump and Tammy Esquivel was 5th in the 100 yd. dash.
Winner of the Brownwood Our Little Miss Pageant is Vivian Duncan of San Saba. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Duncan of San Saba and a student in San Saba Junior High.
Some of the ladies of the Baptist Church here made a Bluebonnet tour to Llano, Kingsland, Marble Falls, Johnson City and Fredericksburg, stopping at the LBJ park for lunch and a tour of the park. The bluebonnets and paint brushes were so beautiful, it was as if the country side was covered with pink and blue carpets. Those who went were Lillie Randolph, Polly Maddox, Jenny Boultinghouse, Thelma Light, Kathleen Kufahl, Floyce Slaughter and Candice Henderson.
