September 3, 1964

CASH AND CARRY? On next Saturday people living in the City of San Saba will have the privilege to vote “yes” or”no” on whether or not they favor over the counter sale of all intoxicants to take home.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hector have recently made a tour in company with others to points of interest in Colorado and Yellow Stone National Park and visited with his sister and family, the Linden Flemings at Farmington, New Mexico.

Airman John Barina of Bergstrom Air Force Base was a recent visitor with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barina.

Congratulations to Butch Edwards on his successful season at the rodeos. His latest prize was a horse trailer. Included in the various prizes he has won are eight saddles. He competes in tie-down roping. Butch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Edwards.

Johnny K. Edmondson, who participates in rodeos throughout Texas and other states, placed fourth in the finals of the American Junior Rodeo Association in Odessa. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Edmondson, he is a senior in San Saba High School.

The City Council voted to hire Joe Ragsdale on a trial basis at a salary of $35,000 per year, $250 per month car allowance and mileage to be paid on out of town trips. The motion to hire Ragsdale carried on a 4-1 vote, with Maxine Miffleton voting against. Ragsdale accepted the position.

Ellen, Justin, Jenna, and Joshua Jones spent most of July in Colorado visiting Ellen’s family. While there they visited Royal Gorge Bridge which is the highest suspension bridge in the world. The view from the bridge is breathtaking. They also camped a few days at Hayden Creek in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Donald Riggs, a member of Boy Scout Troop 55, competed for the second year in a row in the mile swim (this is swimming a mile without stopping or resting). The mile swim was a closing activity of the week spent at Boy Scout Camp-Billy Gibbons.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John W. Scheurer, a 1985 graduate of Cherokee High School, was recently promoted to his present rank while serving with Strike Fighter Squadron 83, Naval Air Station, Cecil Field, Florida. Scheurer joined the Navy in 1987.
