50 Years Ago April 4, 1974

Ronnie Holmes, owner of the new 'Stereo Shak' in San Saba has announced 'Grand Opening' winners. Pete Hibler was awarded the tape deck, Peggy Henager received a tape case while Mary Lou Cisneroz won a tape. Other winners were Wayne Womack, Velva-Print Poster, Joe Williamson, Poster Light; Tommy Ellis, large poster and Herman Bleeker, two bumper stickers. Assisting Holmes is Rod Schoenbacher.

Bonnie Oswald has been selected as a Duchess to represent the Highland Lakes A&M Mother's Club during the 40th annual Cotton Pageant and Ball at Texas A&M University. Miss Oswald a senior student at Angelo State University is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Oswald.

Gary Don Sloan and David Drews powered their way to the District 24-AA Doubles Championship and will now advance to the Regional Tennis meet in Brenham. This is the consecutive year San Saba has won the Doubles Championship.

Children from the Playhouse Kindergarten made a field trip to San Saba High School Band Hall. Those present include Lana McCoy, Brad McCoy, Michelle Bethell, Craig Bethell, Bret Champion, Steven Petmecky, David Lambert, Lorie Harrell, Debra Lusty, Wayne Churchill, Latricia Crawford, Amy Martin, Christa Martin, Marcie Westerfield, Tommie Thompson, Ross Behrens and Walter Chelmis. Some liked the drums and others were not so sure.

San Saba High School members of the cast of 'Mooncalf Mugford' and supporting staff celebrated being the District 24AA Champion UIL One Act Play winners. Not only did San Saba earn the right to advance to the regional contest in Georgetown but they also won best actor and tow best actress awards. Nila Hill won Best Actress; Richard Johnson, Best Actor and Marci Cobb, Best Actress. Other members are Linda Cobb, Larry Edgerton, Cynthia Hamrick and Mike Dennis.

40 Years Ago April 5, 1984

Mrs. Winnie Brown was honored on her 81st birthday with a surprise dinner at Circle D Restaurant hosted by her daughters, Audrey Lively, Wadene Ivy and Bertie Ann Goodale.

Buddy Adams, owner of San Saba Pecan Shelling Company signed a one year contract with the J. M. Smuckers Company. The contract stated that the Pecan Plant will furnish pecans to Smuckers for a period of one year.

Sammie Jo Phillips, oneyear- old daughter of Bo and Donna Phillips of San Saba, won Mini-Queen title at the Hill Country Our Little Miss Pageant held in San Saba and was presented the Mini Crown which she happily wore.

Hats off to Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Harkey for the many beautiful hats from earlier years they gave to the San Saba High School Drama Department. Members of the department, Andra Crockett, Beth Johnson, Tonya Frisbee and Michele Prater, had a good time modeling the hats.

Richland Springs UIL One Act Play, 'To Step on a Crack,' won the Area Meet at Tarleton State University in Stephenville. They will present the play in Regional competition at McMurry College in Abilene. Individual cast members won five awards. Teresa Schneider and Rebecca Moore both won Honorable Mention and Julie O'Neal, Lorrie Mitchel and Jana Shumate were named to the All-Star Cast. Melanie Smith is play director.
