The classical guitar duo of Alex and Wesley Park will perform here Sunday, October 16, for the second of eight programs scheduled for the 2022-2023 season by the Fredericksburg Music Club.
Seating for the 3 p.m. concert in the sanctuary of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 1800 North Llano, will begin at 2:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. The performance is free, although goodwill offerings are welcome.
Originally starting as a duo on the piano when they were young, the Park Brothers in their teens transformed their musical into learning to play the guitar.
That pursuit eventually led them to once again join as a performing duo when, at Pepperdine University, they studied under Christopher Parkening, celebrated as one of the world’s preeminent virtuosos of the classical guitar.
Since then, they have performed together as far away as Heidelberg, Germany; and Hermagor, Austria; in addition to participating in masterclasses from Christopher Parkening, Angel Romero, Andrew York, Jason Vieaux, Scott Tennant, Jubilant Sykes and Meng Su. In the 2014 Pacific Guitar Competition in Monrovia, California, they were finalists in the chamber mixed division category.
Alex Park
Alex Park, who is currently studying classical guitar at Cal State Fullerton, in 2016 won the Thomas Osborn Concerto Competition in addition to being chosen finalist for the Classics Alive Young Artists Competition and placing second in the American Guitar Society's Bickford Award that same year after earning an honorable mention at the 2013 Parness Concerto Competition.
He now teaches at Pangrazio Music Conservatory in Los Angeles, California, in addition to pursuing a master of music degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California.
Wesley Park
Wesley Park received his bachelor of arts studying classical guitar at Pepperdine University at Malibu, California. In addition, he also plays the piano and drums.
He was a finalist in the 2014 Pacific Guitar Competition in the junior division after placing second in the 2013 ASTA/ Aron Green Classical Guitar Competition junior division. In 2004, he was the winner of the Loyola University First Annual Elementary Artists Competition on the piano.
Currently teaching at MozArt Music Academy in Tarzana, California, he is pursuing a master in music degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In addition to freewill offerings given at the door, the October 16 performance is also being made possible through donations from members of the Fredericksburg Music Club.
At the afternoon concert, membership cards for individuals or corporate sponsors wishing to join the Fredericksburg Music Club will also be available at the door.
