Judging took place February 25th, at the TAMU Horticulture Deptartment HortTREC facility in Burleson County.
Regional Pecan Shows are the intermediate step in identifying the top pecans grown in Texas each year. Entries placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of our three regional competitions are advanced to the state competition that will be held in conjunction with the Texas Pecan Growers Association annual conference, San Marcos, July 10, 2022.
Judges for the Central Region were Keith Kubenka and Warren Chatwin of the USDA/ARS Pecan Breeding & Genetics Laboratory. There were 109 entries from 11 Texas counties. Approximately five samples were disqualified due to variety misidentification. The three grand champions were: Gary Conner, Jack County-Commercial; Mebbie Eckhoff, San Saba-Classic; and Alton Reedy, Palo Pinto-Native. The three reserve champions were: Texcan, San Saba-Commercial; Texcan, San Saba-Classic; and Fred Speck, Kerr-Native.
San Saba County sent 22 entries for the Regional Show and brought home 18 ribbons and awards.
