Many of you saw the Mobile Blood Drive Bus on Wallace Street last Tuesday as you passed by San Saba’s First Baptist Church. According to Marsha Hardy, San Saba County Emergency Management Coordinator, seeing that bus is how some people are informed about the blood draw. Thankfully, some of those take the time to interrupt their day and stop to give blood.
Even though the blood drives are advertised in the newspaper and on social media, it sometimes can slip your mind. The big recognizable bus is a great “draw” for the blood drive.
Mrs. Hardy had the sign-in table set up under the beautiful pecan trees on the west side of the church building. She said they slowly inched the table across the grass to “follow the shade.” At the last blood drive, held in July, they had to set up the table just inside the church building due to the extreme heat. Mrs. Hardy noted the weather was good this time, and there was a breeze most of the time with a high in the upper 80s.
Brittany B. and Casey Hobbs from Baylor Scott & White/Temple assisted Mrs. Hardy at the sign-in table. The blood drive was from noon to 6 p.m., and the flow of donors was pretty constant.
Appointments are highly encouraged, but walk-ins are accepted as space allows. There are 46 time slots to choose from when you register online. Twenty-five people preregistered for this blood drive, but two of them were not able to give. One could not come due to a medical problem, and one was not allowed to donate because of no photo ID. Please remember, if you want to donate blood, be sure to bring your photo ID.
Mrs. Hardy reported it was a really good day. There were five first-timers coming to donate. Some were new to the area. Most of the ones donating this time were from San Saba County.
Results of the day
At the end of the drive, there were a total of 42 people registered, eight deferrals, and 32 units of blood donated!
