Byars Walters presented Tommy Tinney with the first place trophy won by the Merchants at the week-long Cherokee Men's Softball Tournament. The Merchants swept through all their games undefeated. Cherokee Grocery took second followed by the Traitors, third; the Banditos, fourth; and Buttery Hardware of Llano, fifth. The Cherokee Budweiser team won the sportsmanship trophy. Mrs. Dee Dee Duncan has moved from the Lily Brothers Big Lake store to assume duties as the store manager at Modern Way. She brings with her 15 years experience in managing grocery stores in West Texas. Her husband, Billy, will be produce manager, and Mike Harris will give extra service to evening customers as night manager. Rose Tinney will serve as the store's bookkeeper.
San Saba Young Homemakers met at the home of Sheralyn Nobles for a dinner and installation of officers. New officers include Wayne Harkey, president; Rachel Vaughn, vice president; Marquita Lloyd, secretary-treasurer and Jana Gatliff, reporter. Mrs. Nobles is the advisor and Sandra Deans, out-going president, presided over the meeting.

Marine Corps Pvt. Christopher M. VanBibber, son of Jennifer N. Johnson of Cherokee, Texas, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego.
Richland Springs' Wylie Cummings and Kelly Fowler will get the chance to protect Texas' reputation as being the top six-man football state when they lead a squad of Texas all stars onto the field in the 2000 All Americas Bowl.
Jo Lei, a senior at Richland Springs ISD, was recently chosen as Richland Springs Antique Tractor Pullers Association 2000 Queen.
Kylie Marie Sloan, a Tarleton State University student from San Saba, was inducted into the Delta Mu Delta national honor society during the 1999-2000 academic year.
The San Saba Maintenance Office of Texas Department of Transportation would like to take this opportunity to congratulate James Wilson on his recent promotion. Wilson accepted the position of Roadway Maintenance Supervisor and assumed his new duties on July 1.
Barton County Community College honored 508 graduates with commencement ceremonies this spring on its main campus and its Fort Riley Military Program site. Local Mark Lewis was one of the 508 graduates. Mark is the son of Darwin and Patty Lewis of San Saba.
Youth Fair Recipe by Lacy Broyles:
Mini Pecan Muffins 1 Cup Light Brown Sugar
1 Cup Light Brown Sugar
1/2 Cup Flour
2 Eggs, Slightly Beaten
1/2 Teaspoon salt 2 Cups Chopped Pecans, Fine
2 Cups Chopped Pecans, Fine
Mix flour and salt and set aside. Mix eggs and sugar, add vanilla, add flour and salt blend in pecans. Spoon mixture sprayed or oiled miniature tins about 3/4 full. Bake 350° 10 to 12 minutes. Yields 24 muffins.
