December 26, 1946

Horace Sargent of San Saba, has just installed us a heating and cooking plant. There was not another person that could have made us believe how handy it was to just strike a match and you have a fire ready to cook or otherwise. Two of our daughters, Mrs. E. M. Scott and Mrs. Rufe Underwood were here at the installation, as we never knew the mechanism of the cooking enterprise.

In order to afford veterans all possible protection against overpriced properties in the current high market, the Veterans Administration announced that effective Jan. 2, 1927, VA, and not the lender, will pick the appraiser to evaluate "reasonable value" for purposes of GI loans.

James E. McCoury of San Saba is chairman of the new AAA Committee for 1947, with O. M. Taylor of Richland Springs, vice chairman and W. H. Darley of San Saba, a regular member, Miss Betty Carter, secretary to Ben H. Ray, who is in charge of the AAA work in the county, has informed.

Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Oshe of this city have announced the purchase of the full operating interests of Hotel San Saba from Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Sadlier, with the deal to become effective on the last of the month. Mr. and Mrs. Oshe plan some improvements on the hotel which they have leased, in connection with the Sadliers, from George B. Roberts and Stoy D. Roberts of Stephenville since the first of the year and on which they have a long-time lease.

Well, here's wishing the county press and its force "A Happy Christmas, and hope they will not imbibe in spirit malts to make it happy, as there are lots of silly people who think to get crazy on liquor, is the way to celebrate the occasion; but far be it. We are bone dry and have seen many a good man with a good business, ruined by drinking. No one wants a doctor to visit a sick person that drinks. No business can prosper, with a drinking manager. We hear over the radio often, if you drink, don't drive. If you drive don't drink. It's a true saying.

December 31, 1981

San Saba's Pecan Show and Food Show winners were featured in the December issue of The Pecan Press out of College Station. Photos of Cindy Harvell, Cindy Vaughn, Vondene Wilder and Judy McCoy were included, as well as their recipes for Orange Divinity, Autumn Harvest Cake, Pecan Pie and Divinity. Tisdale & Sons, J. M. Gage, Bagley & Sons, Double W Pecans, Leon Whitley and Karla & Kristi Ellis were all mentioned as winners in the 1981 show. Leonard's Big Valley farms were part of a feature story in the same issue.

Visiting Sunday night with Mrs. Flora Bowden were Mr. and Mrs. Cronje Swindall, Brent and Jennifer, of Gatesville and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowden, Stephanie and Brad.

Alva Zulauf spent a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Zulauf and Sherry.

Happy holidays to the staff of Llano News and San Saba News for doing a fine job printing not only news of the town in their respective counties, but the news in general. I for one have really enjoyed reading various articles they print from week to week. Our hats are off to you.

Mr. and Mrs. Randolph, Kelli, Krisit and Koby were Christmas dinner guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Dickison in San Saba.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rhoades and Tracy ate Christmas dinner with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rhoades Sr. in Llano.

The “Skip Bo” party was held last week at the home of Mrs. W. C. McKneely. Those present were Bonnie Johanson, Louise Estep, Beth Estep, Margaret Altizer, Elouise Harris, Polly Maddox, Floyce Slaughter and Patsy and Melissa Norris.

People busy exchanging gifts that didn’t work our for one reason or another; stores getting ready for after Christmas sales; “White” sales beginning –– these are the signs of after Christmas activity. The most repeated statement seems to be, “I’m going to have to lose some weight after the first of the year.” Begin making the new year a special one by celebrating wisely tonight! – Donna Blossman
