Recently, C.J., a 14 year old freshman from Llano, spent an afternoon at Cherokee Home for Children sharing his knowledge of chess and playing games with children who were interested in learning more about the game. His visit gave the children an opportunity to learn something new, challenge themselves, and simply enjoy time together around a chessboard.
C. J.’s passion for chess began when he was 8 years old after he didn’t make the Llano Elementary UIL chess team. Rather than letting that disappointment stop him, he started the Llano Chess Club. That interest has continued to grow, and for the past four years he has volunteered his time teaching chess through the Boys & Girls Club.
He has invested in his passion in more ways than just his time. C.J. has purchased the chess boards and equipment with his own money and also helps with expenses for chess tournaments.
For the children at Cherokee Home, C.J.’s willingness to share that passion means more than learning how to move pieces across a board. It gives them a chance to discover a new interest, develop problemsolving skills, and spend time with someone who is excited to share something he loves.
We are grateful to C.J. for bringing his enthusiasm for chess to Cherokee Home and for showing our kids how much joy can come from sharing your time and talents with others.
