Anne's Musings

Last week I was visiting with my favorite (and only) nephew on Mother’s Day. BK had called to wish me Happy Mother’s Day, and I sent him a copy of the last Musing’s article.

My sweet Brian is a staunch Republican, conservative, generous, funny, and much beloved by all our family. He recently turned 53 years old and is no spring chicken. Even so, after reading my inflammatory article about "The Great Prevaricator,” as I have named him, I expected Brian to fuss at me. Instead, he said, and I quote, “Aren’t we glad that the Trump error (era) is over!” He made sure I understood specifically that error was his intended word! As Ellen DeGeneres always says, “Well, anyway!”

On another chuckle front, I was listening to an extremely well-educated nationally known attorney commenting on defense strategies for defending felons, in this instance, one of the January 6th insurrectionists. He said all defense attorneys basically have two defenses, one that the defendant has a strong alibi. For example, maybe the felon was a thousand miles away (verifiable alibi IF the felon was so lucky!), OR, that the felon was dumb as dirt and didn’t really know any better! Think the defending attorney may be opting for the second defense!

This particular insurrectionist is a 20-some-odd-year-old Ohioan whose defense is that he has confused Donald Trump with Jesus Christ. Anthony Antonio believed that he was doing Christ’s work by throwing water bottles at Capitol police, forcing doors open into the building, and desecrating Statuary Hall! I guess it is just another case of not understanding the words of Christ that are written in red in versions of the Bible. As I said, think the attorney may well be going for the Dumb and Dumber defense!

On a joyful note, my family met as a whole this past weekend for the first time in more than a year. We have communicated everyday by text and occasionally by Zoom over the past year and half. I have seen my Dallas kids twice, both times outside and from more than six feet away. My Austin kids, I have seen more frequently because I go into Austin to shop and to doctors’ appointments.

Even so, we have always maintained the Covid protocol, outdoors, masks, six feet away, less than six people together at a time. My daughters are both teachers, and these practices are serious business to all our family.

Thank God and Mr. Biden for his Covid response, and even thank Mr. Trump for moving to get the vaccines started. Interesting that many of those that oppose taking the vaccines are his followers! (https://www.wfae.org/politics/2021-04-17/arecovid-19-vaccination-ratesas-simple-as-republicans-vsdemocrats). Trump is vaccinated and safe, but many of his followers are not! C’est la vie! “Such is life!”
