SONORA, TX — August 21, 2025 — The San Saba Armadillos wrapped up their preseason with a strong scrimmage on the road against the Sonora Broncos on Thursday night, showing steady improvement from both the junior varsity and varsity squads as they prepare to kick off regular season play.
The junior varsity squad continued its upward trend, sustaining several solid drives on offense while keeping the Broncos out of the end zone for most of the evening. The JV defense showed grit, giving up only one score in a performance that demonstrated their growing confidence and discipline.
The varsity Armadillos also looked sharp on both sides of the ball. Against a solid Sonora defense, San Saba’s offense clicked with key plays, including a critical third-down reception by Cash Bryant that extended a drive, setting up Luke Tharp, who powered his way into the end zone for the score.
Defensively, the Armadillos were dominant. Linebacker Graden Lebow anchored the defense, flying to the ball and leading with physicality, while Kolton Pierce made his presence felt on both the offensive and defensive lines.
San Saba’s first-team defense was nearly impenetrable, allowing just one first down throughout the scrimmage.
Head Coach Andreas Aguirre praised his team’s effort and focus while emphasizing the need for continued improvement.
“I’m very pleased with both the offensive and defensive performances,” Aguirre said. “But we can’t be satisfied where we’re at — we’re looking to get 1% better each day.”
The Armadillos now turn their attention to Week 1 of the regular season. The junior varsity will open at home, while the varsity squad will hit the road to face Grape Creek on Friday night.
