The San Saba Tennis Team played in the Copperas Cove Invitational Tennis Tournament. The JV played on Thursday, February 17th, and the Varsity played on Friday, February 18th. This was one of the strongest tournaments we will play in all year. Their were 17 teams playing in the tournament. Teams in the tournament besides San Saba were Leander Vista Ridge, Brownwood, Burnet, Harker Heights, Waco High School, Gatesville, Belton, Leander Glen, Lampasas, Copperas Cove, Bastrop, Killeen Ellison, Leander Rouse, Robinson, China Springs, Holy Trinity, and Temple.
Coach Bourke was very proud of the way our kids competed against schools much larger than ours. The JV played well considering the weather was miserable. The temperature was in the 30’s with 20 to 30 mph winds. Playing for the JV were Keeley Pham in Girls Singles; and Tanner Proffitt and Esperanza Baez, and Karol Guerrero and Evelyn Davila who played in Girls Doubles. Alejandro Parra played in Boys Singles.
Playing in the Varsity Division in Girls Doubles were Hannah Vines and Demaris Patino, Dana Luna and Mia Kilman, and Minerva Vasquez and Natalie Cuevas. Delaney Ellis and Kalina Schaeffer played in Girls Singles. Jacob Singleton played in Boys Singles. In Boys Doubles were Justin Hernandez and Timothy Williams, and Jose Aguilera and Christian Morales. Jacob Singleton won three and lost two matches on Friday. Jacob finished in 6th place in a division of 28 players. In the round of 32, Jacob defeated Will Smith from Copperas Cove. In the round of 16, Jacob defeated Cohen Scott from Waco High School. Jacob lost a hard fought match in the quarterfinals to the number 3 seeded player Parker Kalfesh from Vista Ridge. Jacob came back and won his next match against Tim Forbes from Killeen Ellison and then lost to Matt Smith from Harker Heights. Timothy Williams and Justin Hernandez lost in the consolation finals to Harker Heights 6 - 8.
In Girls Doubles, Mia Kilman and Dana Luna won their round of 32 match against Belton 8 - 1. Natalie Cuevas and Minerva Vasquez won their round of 32 match against Copperas Cove 9 - 8. In the round of 16, Kilman and Luna lost a tough match to Gatesville, and Cuevas and Vasquez lost to Brownwood 8 - 9.
In Girls singles, Kalina Shaeffer won her round of 32 match against Sierra Nunnery from Leander Glenn. In the round of 16, Kalina lost to Copperas Cove.
This week, we hope everyone can come out and support the tennis team as they will be hosting a JV Tournament on Thursday, February 24th, and a Varsity Tournament on Friday, February 25th. Play will start at 8:00 a.m. and last until around 7 or 8 p.m.
Schools coming to the JV Tournament are Llano, Mason, Junction, Burnet, Gatesville, Brownwood, Copperas Cove, Winters, Blanco, and Florence. Schools coming to Varsity Tournament are Llano, Mason, Junction, Brownwood, Winters, Blanco, Eldorado, Rocksprings, Panther Creek, Santa Anna, Lohn, Florence, and Burnet.
