The San Saba Tennis Team open the 2021 season on January 21 playing the Burnet Bulldogs in Burnet. The tennis team played very well for their first match of the season. Burnet came out on top by winning 12 to 10. The Armadillos took an early lead after the doubles play by winning 5 of the 8 doubles matches. Burnet came back and won 9 of the 14 singles matches. Head Coach David Bourke felt good about the way our players competed against Burnet for it to be our first match of the season. Playing against Burnet were: Girls Team - Dana Luna, Mia Kilman, Sara Saint, Irene Jimenez, Jazmin Guiterez, Leia Kilman, Cadence Jimenez, and Damaris Patino. On the Boys Team - Johnny Meador, Eleu Davila, Jose Aguiler (12), Jonathan Perez, Timothy Williams, and Jose Aguiler (9).

The next day, Friday, January 22, the Armadillos traveled to Llano to take on the Yellow Jackets. The Armadillos once again took an early lead after the doubles matches by going up by 6 to 2. This time the Dillos took care of business in the singles matches winning 8 and losing 4 matches to give the Dillos the victory 14 to 6. We had the same kids playing in this match as we did against Burnet, except we had our #1 girls playing against Llano, Brinlee Johnson, which strengthened our girls team and gave us more depth.

On Wednesday, January 27, the Varsity will be playing in the Llano Varsity Tournament, and on Thursday, January 28, the Junior Varsity will be playing in the Llano Junior Varsity Tournament. The tournaments will start at 8:00 a.m. and finish around 6:00 p.m. If you can make it to Llano, the kids would love your support.

We are very excited about this year, and hopefully the new tennis courts will be ready by the time our scheduled home matches and tournaments are scheduled. At the present time, we have 38 players out for tennis, and we hope to pick up about 12 more players after basketball and power lifting season is over.

The San Saba Tennis Association will have a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, in the foyer of the white gym. All parents, former tennis players or anyone who is interested in helping us out, we would like for you to attend. We will be discussing fundraisers, adult and junior tennis leagues, adult and junior pickle ball leagues and our junior and adult summer tournaments. If you have any questions about the tennis association, contact Coach Ralph Cox at 325-372-8725 or email at <rccox@centex.net>.
