San Saba Armadillos bury Johnson City Eagles, 47-21

Under the lights of Rogan Field last night, the San Saba Armadillos kicked off district play in emphatic fashion, defeating the Johnson City Eagles 47-21 in a high-energy showdown that saw explosive plays on both sides of the ball.

The game started slowly for San Saba, with Johnson City striking first on a 7-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful extra point to go up 7-0. But the Armadillos quickly found their rhythm behind senior standout Luke Tharp, who broke loose on a 37-yard touchdown run. Kicker Brandon Gonzales tied it up at 7-7 with the first of his five successful extra points on the night.

Johnson City momentarily regained momentum with a kickoff return for a touchdown, only for Tharp to electrify the crowd with an 82-yard kickoff return of his own, knotting the score at 14-14 by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged to San Saba. Jason Everett punched in a 1-yard touchdown, and Tharp followed up with a 7-yard score of his own. With Gonzales adding the extra points, the Armadillos carried a 28-14 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the San Saba defense stepped up in a major way. A key fumble recovery by Clayton Meador set up another 1-yard touchdown run by Everett. Not long after, Cash Bryant intercepted a Johnson City pass, setting the stage for Tharp’s third rushing touchdown of the night—an 8-yard run that opened the fourth quarter. Though the extra point was missed, San Saba had built a commanding 41-14 lead.

Johnson City managed one final score on a 3-yard touchdown run, but the Armadillos slammed the door with a 17-yard touchdown run from Enrique Mendoza. Another missed PAT brought the final score to 47-21.

San Saba’s ground game was relentless, racking up yards and chewing clock. Offensive leaders included:

• Luke Tharp: 27 carries for 163 yards, 3 rushing touchdowns, plus an 82-yard kickoff return TD

• Jason Everett: 21 carries for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns

• Enrique Mendoza: 4 carries for 31 yards and 1 touchdown

• Graden Lebow: 6 carries for 29 yards

On special teams, Brandon Gonzales went 5-for-7 on extra point attempts, keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Defensively, the Armadillos were aggressive and disciplined:

• Jason Everett led the team with 8 tackles, 3 for loss, and a sack.

• Clayton Meador had 7 tackles, 4 for loss, a sack, and a key fumble recovery.

• Luke Tharp and Kaylub Roberts each tallied 6 tackles and 2 tackles for loss, with Roberts also recording a sack.

• Graden Lebow added 5 tackles, including one for loss and a sack.

• Cash Bryant added an interception that helped swing momentum firmly in San Saba’s favor.

With the win, the Armadillos improve to 4- 2 overall and 1-0 in district play. They’ll look to build on that momentum next Friday when they host the Thorndale Bulldogs at Rogan Field. Game Recap 1st Quarter
