On Thursday, May 18th, the San Saba Rotary Club hosted the 41st Annual Honor Students’ Banquet at the San Saba Civic Center! One hundred and forty Honor Students from San Saba County school districts, their families and guests, were recognized for the students’ excellence in education.
San Saba Rotary President Beth Griess welcomed the students and their families and introduced banquet speaker State Board of Education Representative Tom Maynard. One of 15 State Board Representatives from throughout Texas, Maynard challenged the Honor Students to always be observant and engaged in Texas government and good citizenship. He reminded the group that even as early as 1836, Texas, as an independent country and then later as a state among the United States, always valued and sought an educated citizenry. Maynard pushed the students to remain active and involved in all things Texas.
Ms. Griess presented the Rotary Four Way Test Award to Jamie and Jesse Hunt for their incredible efforts working with Mission San Saba. The Rotary Four Way Test: “Is it TRUE? Is it FAIR to all? Does it build GOODWILL and is it BENEFICIAL to the community?” are all reflected in the good works of Mission San Saba.
Ms. Griess then recognized Rotarian of the Year, Jacqueline Carlson, for her awesome and successful tenure as Executive Secretary of the local organization.
San Saba County Honor Students included 32 from Cherokee ISD, 29 from Rich-land Springs ISD, and 79 from San Saba ISD. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors received recognition and tee shirts from Rotary.
Because of the success of this year’s Rotary Golf Tournament and the strong support of local businesses and organizations that helped with the tournament, San Saba Rotary was able to award 12 $1,000 scholarships! To seven students from San Saba ISD: Madison Shahan, Delany Ellis, Lexy Amthor, Demaris Patino, Noah Martinez, Jaxzen Mask, and Caroline McHam. To two students from Richland Springs: Hannah Miller and Tyler Grant. To three students from Cherokee: Joseph Bond, Kora Berrio and Kase Bordner.
EMS scholarships presented for students entering the medical field, the recipients were: Dejah Vasquez and Olivia Lusty from San Saba ISD and Kora Berrio from Cherokee ISD.
President Griess thanked a students and parents for coming and all the many organizations and businesses that helped to make the banquet and scholarships possible.
