The Richland Springs Coyotes triumphed over the Brookesmith Mustangs Friday in both teams' District 15-A Division II opener. The final score was 59 to 12, and the Coyotes generated 237 total yards, with 205 rushing yards and 32 passing yards.
Sophomore Cohen Ethridge (#13) led the team with 116 rushing yards for three touchdowns, a 43-yard punt return touchdown, and a 69-yard kickoff return touchdown. Billy Perry (#17) added 79 yards to the total and scored three times. Perry also completed a 32-yard pass to Hutton Rogers (#9) Gage Behrens (#20) contributed 10 yards on the ground, and Ethan Deeds (#8) ran a 46-yard kickoff return touchdown Defensively, Ethridge logged 15 tackles, followed by EJ Aviles (#5) with 14. Rush Norris (#3) had 12 tackles, and Perry added 11 tackles and four sacks. Jim Eckermann (#1) had four tackles and one sack, while Rogers logged six tackles for the Coyote defense.
Coyote football will take a week off for their District Bye week, while the Lady Coyote Volleyball teams face the Zephyr Bulldogs at home on Tuesday, October 15th, and travel to Mullin on Saturday, October 19th, to continue their district play. On Saturday, October 12th, the Lady Coyotes defeated the Rochelle Hornets in a four-set win, making them 1-0 in district play.
The Lady Coyote Cross Country teams competed in their district meet on Wednesday, October 9th. The JH Coyotes were the 2nd place team overall, with Grace Younggreen taking home a silver medal, Brylee Chandler placing 5th, Kaylee Salas in 8th, and Brinlynn Mann claiming the 10th place spot. The varsity team, made up of Rylie Eckert, Raegan Eckert, Emma Bryant, Mallory Okerson, Paige Bailey, and Kinzley Daly, were the District Champs and will be competing at the Regional XC Meet on October 22nd in Corpus Christi. Rylie Eckert took home the individual gold medal, Raegan Eckert claimed silver, Emma Bryant was in 6th place, and Mallory Okerson was the 10th place individual overall.
