Richland Springs HS students shine in UIL Theatrical Design Contest

Richland Springs High School proudly celebrates the talented students who recently competed in this year’s UIL Theatrical Design Contest. Participants were challenged to develop and present original design concepts based on The King Stag, adapted from Carlo Gozzi’s Il Re Cervo by Eberle Thomas and Barbara Redmond.

The UIL Theatrical Design contest requires students to think creatively and critically as they bring a script to life through visual storytelling. Each student selected a specific design category and developed a fully realized concept rooted in their artistic vision while staying true to the play's themes and tone. Richland Springs competes in the combined 1A–3A classification for this event. If the students qualify for the state contest, it will be held in May at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center (PAC).

Fallon Soto completed a set design project that demonstrated imagination, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of theatrical space. Her design reimagined the magical and whimsical world of The King Stag, blending dramatic elements with urban-inspired staging choices. Fallon collaborated artistically with Eli Hutchins, who created the original artwork featured in her entry. Eli’s illustrations helped visually capture the mood and atmosphere of the production, enhancing the overall impact of the set concept.

Kinzley Daly competed in the individual set design category, constructing a detailed set model as part of her submission. Her work reflected careful craftsmanship and creativity, offering a three-dimensional interpretation of the play’s imaginative setting. Through her model, Kinzley demonstrated her ability to translate written text into a functional and visually compelling stage environment.

Kasadee Daly entered the individual marketing design category, developing promotional materials to represent the production. Her marketing concept highlighted the fantasy and intrigue of The King Stag, illustrating how design plays a vital role not only on stage but also in attracting and engaging audiences.

This marks only the second time Richland Springs ISD has participated in the UIL Theatrical Design Contest, making this year’s entries an especially meaningful accomplishment for the students and the district’s fine arts program. Congratulations to these talented designers for representing Richland Springs with pride, and best of luck as the competition takes place.
