Over the weekend, we celebrated another successful Fall Festival. From my little corner, I had the opportunity to watch what felt like hundreds (I don’t know…30) of little faces light up as they “caught” their prizes. I witnessed an Indian riding a dinosaur being chased by a ninja and a princess. And, I was super impressed by the boating skills on display by one Captain Rawlee. The event ended, and yet the shenanigans continued. The after-hours fun, if you have not yet had the pleasure, consists of groups of young ones attempting to sneak up and wrap some of the houses. Though this may not sound appealing initially, I have found the experience to be quite entertaining. Listening to the shrieks and giggles when you start to defend your territory from the onslaught of toilet paper and silly string, oddly enough, brings a smile to my face.
Traditions are important. According to author Frank Sonnenberg, traditions contribute to a sense of belonging and help to bring people together, reinforce beliefs and values of the community, and serve as a means for creating memories. And, thanks to the organization of Kari Owen and the contributions and work from all of you, I feel like this weekend many more memories were made.
