It was an exciting week of football as the Cherokee Indians took on county rival, the Richland Springs Coyotes. The junior high Indians did something on Thursday that had not been done for numerous years; they defeated Richland Springs with a score of 21 – 20. Coach Shipman says, “The entire team played well. The team was led by all 8th grade boys: Joel Valdez, Issic Martinez, Emmett Jones, and Jeremiah Wakefield. Several great defensive plays were turned in by Carlos Preciado. Congratulations to our junior high Indians on their important win!

The varsity team played a hard fought game against the Richland Springs Coyotes on Friday night. The Indians were up first by 8 with a touchdown pass from Isaac Graves to Joey Bond. The PAT by Bond was good. Richland Springs responded. Tristian Arkansas was up next to score a touchdown for the Indians. The opponent scored again. The Indians were up by 10 with a touchdown pass from Arkansas to Erick Miller. The Coyotes scored again. Arkansas scored another touchdown on a kickoff return. The Coyotes tied the score up at 30-30. Arkansas completed a touchdown to Miller with Richland Springs responding. A touchdown pass was made from Graves to Bond with the PAT by Bond bringing the score to 44-38. Richland Springs tied it up again at 44 and then scored again before the Indians came on back with a touchdown from Arkansas. The PAT was run in by Bond. At halftime the score was 51-52. The opponent scored first in the second half, but the Indians were quick to respond with a touchdown pass from Arkansas to Bond. Richland Springs scored once more. Arkansas scored again with another PAT from Bond. Richland Springs scored a touchdown, and Arkansas scored on the kickoff return. The PAT by Bond was good bringing the score to 75-76. The Coyotes scored again and then Arkansas responded with a touchdown pass to Miller bringing the score to 81-84 with the Indians trailing. The game ended there. Whew! What a game! We sure are proud of our boys.

Next week is Red Ribbon Week where we take a stand against drugs and alcohol abuse as well as bullying. We will bring awareness through lessons, activities, and dress up days. Monday’s theme is Be REDy to Live a Drug Free Life. Wear red that day. Tuesday’s theme is Hats off to being drug free. Wear a hat. Wednesday’s theme is I’m Too Bright For Drugs. Wear neon colored clothing. Thursday is Say Boo to Drugs. Wear a Halloween costume.
