Last week, our football teams took on the Richland Springs Coyotes. Junior high played in Richland Springs and came out just a little short. Coach Newman says, “It was a hard fought battle. The team gave a great effort, and we are proud of them.” The varsity game was played here at home, and it was an exciting one! The game was back and forth during the first half with Cherokee going into halftime with the lead. The Indians never stopped fighting, but the Coyotes snagged the win with a 92-70 final score. Coach White reports, “Gunner Baugh, Rode Ligon and Erick Miller led the way on offense. Kase Bordner played well on both sides of the ball. Joel Valdez made some great throws and had a couple 4th down stops on defense. Isaac Graves led the offense to score above our scoring average of 62 points per game.” We are proud of our boys this week and can’t wait to see what this week holds as we take on Lohn. Both games will be on Thursday night and will be in Cherokee.

Our cross country teams traveled to Lometa last week where junior high girls, varsity girls, and varsity boys were all district champions! For our junior high girls, Tilar Turman placed 3rd. Lily Graves placed 8th, and another Cherokee Lady Indian placed 9th. For the varsity girls, Payton Hanley placed 2nd. Lauren Roberson placed 3rd. Sydnie Bond placed 5th. Brissa Baugh placed 6th. Olivia Ziehr placed 8th. Maycie Shanklin placed 9th. Skylar Harris placed 10th. In the varsity boys’ division, Caleob Houston placed 1st. James Beck placed 2nd. Matthew Gass placed 3rd. Kase Bordner placed 5th. Waylon Harris placed 7th. Joel Valdez placed 8th. Our varsity teams will advance to regionals and will compete on Tuesday the 26th in Grand Prairie. Great job to our runners!

Next week is Red Ribbon Week where we learn about bullying prevention and drug abuse awareness. We will “Lei Off Drugs” on Monday by wearing Hawaiian attire. Hats off to being drug free is Tuesday. Wednesday is “Friends Don’t Let Friends Do Drugs” day where we will dress like a twin with someone. On Thursday, the theme is “Drugs are Scary,” and we will wear school-friendly costumes.

Lots of fun is happening over here at Cherokee ISD!
